Library Loves Meme

Saturday, December 7, 2019

This is a meme I took from Steph's blog here! Sorry if the formatting gets all messed up on this post, that often happens when I copy and paste stuff to this blog. I don't know why and I'm usually good at sorting this stuff out, but not, for some reason, on this blog!

1. When did you first go to the library/get a library card?

I don't remember having my own library card as a kid. I think there was a policy that kids had to be on their parent's library card. I was on my dad's. I suppose then that the first library card that was my own was for my high school library, which I got given when I started aged 11. I probably still have it somewhere! It was blue.

2. How often do you use your library?

I use one of my local libraries all the time. I go to a craft club every Monday that is held in the IT suite of a library a few miles away from where I live. It means the room is used, showing a need for the library to remain open. I often browse books while I'm there, and even though it's quite a small library there's still tons of great books in it. I sometimes use the reserve function online to get a book to that library to pick up, so that I don't have to drive other places to get it.

My book club is also supported by the library, and we try to have half of our books a year be ones that come from the library, to again use it and show there is a need for it.

I don't use the library in my village very often, but it is truly tiny and parking near it is difficult. I think the council will close it down in the next few years, which will be a shame as it is often used by others in the village.

3. Have you ever had a late or lost library book?

No I don't think so! I'm a bit paranoid about library return times, and I think I was the only person I knew at university who never had a fine.

4. What’s your favourite thing about your library?

I guess I'm fond of the one I go to craft club in because it has a good teen section, because it supports our craft club, because the staff are friendly, and because it has good parking. It's also in a nice village where I sometimes do a bit of shopping too. It's a small town/large village!

5. Are you a browser or do you plan what you’re taking out?

Oh I'm a broswer. I pick up anything that catches my eye. Some of the best books I've read have happened into my hands that way! Sometimes, as I say, I request books from the catalogue, which is really useful, so I guess I do plan then. My town council demolished the old central library a few years ago to build another, and put all the books in storage in council buildings. Using the request service meant that you could get anything that was in storage, which was good. I haven't actually been to the new library, although I've heard it's really nice and has a good cafe onsite!

6. Name a book you took a chance on from the library.

I think the most recent one was Bitter Orange by Claire Fuller, which I read last year and LOVED, after I picked it up on a whim.

7. What is best book you read from the library?

I have really strong memories of reading Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal when I was at sixth form college. I read one on the bus on the way home one dark and stormy night. I know I made my dad read both, too!

8. Have you ever taken the same book out multiple times?

I probably did as a teen, and it was probably something completely embarrassing like a Sweet Valley High book.

9. Have you read a good book set in a library?

Hmm that's a good question. I can't think of any off the top of my head. What are your favourites?

10. Have you used your library’s ebook and audiobook options?

I haven't - I don't actually know how to! I don't really like audiobooks, although when I had a longer commute I used to listen to them on the way to work. I don't know how to access ebooks and to be honest I already have so many that I probably don't need to.

11. Which is the best library you’ve been to?

Oh it's got to be Trinity College Library in Dublin which is home to many amazing books but most famously the Book of Kells, which is a really old illustrated book of the gospels. It is absolutely amazing to see and learn about. The library itself is huge and has huge tall ladders up to the books. If you're ever in Dublin, it's an absolute must-do tourist thing. I've been twice and I would go back tomorrow!

12. What would make you use your local library more?

Parking! I do use my library enough - and recommend you do too!

Year in Review meme - 2016

Friday, January 6, 2017

I stole this from LiveJournal, I did it there last year even though I never post on LJ anymore!

Number of books read in 2016? 81

Fiction/non-fiction? 80:1. What can I say, I prefer fiction!

Books by men/women? I think that I have more YA by women, which bears out in my stats: 61 books by women, 18 by men, two were anthologies with a mixture of authors. Wow, that's steeply in favour of women!

Most books by a single author?
The Robins - Robin Talley (Lies We Tell Ourselves, and As I Descended) and Robin Stevens (the Wells & Wong novels and short stories), Non Pratt, Susan Hill.

Favourite?
I loved Not If I See You First by Eric Lindstrom, The Woman in Black by Susan Hill, Paper Butterflies by Lisa Heathfield, and Ballroom by Anna Hope

Least favourite?
I rarely talk about my least favourite books on here because I think it's just too mean to authors!

Oldest?
Well nothing classic, for sure. I bet the oldest was about ten years old, whoops! Oh, maybe it was The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas?

Newest?
I read a lot of books on release, the newest would possibly be I'll Be Home for Christmas which I read just before Christmas!

Longest title?
A Dictionary of Mutual Understanding by Jackie Copleton, probably

Shortest title
Flawed by Caroline Aherne

What genres did you read in?
48 books were Young Adult, which says a lot about me as a reader! 16 were general adult fiction, and 9 were crime thriller types. 8 books were generally for kids, under which I'd include the Wells & Wong series.

How many re-reads?
None! There's way too many new books for me to re-read! I usually re-read one of my favourite books, but didn't manage that this year. I did read a different Patrick Gale book which I enjoyed - Rough Music

Any in translation?
I don't think so

Where did they come from?
35 were paperbacks, most of which I personally owned. 8 were hardback, some of which I borrowed. 36 were eBooks, most of which came from NetGalley. Two were audibooks, and overall, around five came from the library.

Favorite new author you discovered this year
Ooh, erm! Emery Lord, Lisa Heathfield, Graham Swift. The first two are on my "must buy" list when their new stuff comes out.

Bookclub books
My book club is a somewhat strange one, but I've started this year with renewed enthusiasm for it. Ballroom by Anna Hope was a book club book and was excellent, as were Mothering Sunday by Graham Swift and The News from Paraguay by Lily Tuck.

What are your book resolutions for 2017?
To make a concerted effort to read more every day and not keep checking Twitter instead!

A-Z of books

Author You’ve Read the Most Books From.
Joanne Harris, or possibly Peter Robinson. I've read most of the DCI Banks books and always enjoy them.

Best Sequel Ever?
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins - I think it's the best of the trilogy to the honest.

Currently Reading...
Different Class by Joanne Harris. It's a sequel to her novel Gentlemen and Players which is one of my favourite novels ever.

Drink of Choice While Reading.
Water, usually

E-reader or physical Book?
Both! I have loooots of physical books but I also like reading on my tablet and scrolling through loads of books to see what catches my eye! I rarely spend any money on Kindle books, I get lots for free!

Fictional character you probably would have actually dated as a teen.
Cath from Fangirl. The only thing that would have made that book better would have been if it was LGBTQ! I loved Cath and we could have written glorious fanfic together!

Glad you gave this book a chance...
Gosh, so many! I love reading reviews that make me take a chance on something I wouldn't normally. I like meeting authors and buying their books because they sound interesting.

Hidden gem book.
I don't feel like We Were Liars by E Lockhart got the recognition it deserved! It was fascinating and horrible and had such an unreliable narrator.

Important moment in your reading life.
I suppose from being very small, I've always read by myself and found importance in it. I don't remember not being able to read! I loved Enid Blyton when I was little, and I loved Maeve Binchy as a teenager. I suppose reading The Handmaid's Tale for the first time was important because it made me realise that books could impact on my worldview.

Just finished...
Fire Colour One which I've just reviewed.

Kind of books you won’t read.
I'm not much into fantasy

Longest book you’ve read?
Not sure, Different Class that I'm reading at the moment is over 400 pages which for me is really long.

Major book hangover...
We Were Liars made me think about it all day.

Number of bookcases you own?
Our back bedroom is a library, and the books are mostly all mine, and there's over a thousand of them on two shelves, and two bookshelves - they're all doubled or tripled up because I have a lot of books.

One book you’ve read multiple times....
I've read my favourite novel - Five Quarters of the Orange by Joanne Harris - four times. I'm not a big re-reader - there's so many books to read!

Preferred place to read?
Bed!

Quote that inspires you/gives you all the feels...
A book is a goft you can open again and again

Reading regret.
Just that I didn't pick up some stuff earlier

Series you started and need to finish...
The Raven Boys books. I read the first one and I really need to move on to The Dream Thieves

Three of your all-time favorite books?
Notes From An Exhibition by Patrick Gale
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
The Seduction of Water by Carol Goodman

Unapologetic fangirl for....
I suppose Young Adult in general as I'm 32 now. I love it; the breadth of the genre is stunning.

Very excited for this release...
One by Sarah Crossan which is on its way to me

Worst bookish habit?
Buying YET MORE books even though I have ALL THE BOOKS

X marks the spot: start on the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book
My books are downstairs and I'm not! I'll look on my Kindle app and tell you the 27th: Oh, it's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which I've never read and thought I might like to

Your latest purchase...
Kill the Boyband arrived yesterday

Zzzzz-snatcher book (last book that kept you up way too late)....
The Dictionary of Mutual Understanding which I thoroughly thoroughly enjoyed!
